CMA Infobase Implementing Clinical Practice Guidelines: A Handbook for Practitioners
PREVIOUS PageNEXT Page

Preface

The ideas presented in this handbook were developed primarily at a November 1996 workshop on how to implement clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). This workshop was the third in a series organized by the CMA in collaboration with the National Partnership for Quality in Health (NAPAQH) whose members include

  • Association of Canadian Medical Colleges
  • Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation
  • College of Family Physicians of Canada
  • Federation of Medical Licensing Authorities of Canada
  • The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Canadian Medical Association.

These workshops are part of an ongoing effort to coordinate and facilitate the preparation and use of CPGs in Canada. Maintaining and improving the quality of health care, especially in these times of health reform and economic restraint, is a priority for all NAPAQH members.

As health care providers, we must also ensure that the care we provide is based on the best available evidence and experience. Tools such as evidence-based CPGs will help us achieve this goal.

This handbook is intended to be a practical resource for health care providers who implement CPGs in their practices in a variety of settings across Canada. We hope you will recognize the barriers that have been identified and be able to customize suggested strategies to suit your situation.
